Day 115: Penong to Streaky Bay
It is another nice day and we have only a few hours drive to Streaky Bay. Unfortunately, just before Ceduna, we have to pass through quarantine into SA from WA. There is very inconsistent guidance on what fresh food items are allowable to take across the border. Only fresh fruit is clearly not allowed, so we made sure we had consumed our stocks beforehand.
Once at the quarantine inspection we were surprised that potatoes, cauliflower, cabbage and shallots were also not allowed so they were confiscated.
Conveniently there is a Foodland Supermarket in Ceduna only a few km down the road, with caravan parking nearby. You can imagine what a good business this is as people have to replenish what they have just had confiscated. Another couple we spoke to who had just gone through before us had a totally different experience, they has no trouble with potatoes but had their honey taken !
We decided to go for a walk in Ceduna and get a cup of coffee. That was a bit more of a challenge on a Sunday than we expected.
The mainstream is very quiet
Ceduna Jetty

There was a hotel/motel just near the jetty which seemed to be the only place in town where we could get a coffee, after which we called into the Foodland Supermarket to partly restock.
We were in Streaky Bay just after midday and after a bit off a mix up with our booking at the Foreshore Caravan Park, we settled in.
The park is right on the beach, and quite windy, so being a row or two back from the beachfront suits us fine.
Looking along the beach towards town
After lunch we go for a walk into town. There are one or two fishermen trying their luck, and a gathering of expectant pelicans hoping they are successful.
Soon the Streaky Bay Jetty comes into view, as does the Streaky Bay Hotel, which seems to the centre of activity in the town today. We intend going there for dinner tonight.
Streaky Bay Hotel
In the foreshore park opposite the hotel is a statue of a local hero, Australian Champion Jockey, Kerrin McEvoy, who was apparently born in Streaky Bay.
A walk out onto the jetty was next and there were some great views looking back to shore and the hotel.
A netted swimming area off the jetty seems to be pretty popular to avoid shark attacks
Why is it that birds like perching on anything electrical ?
Our walk back to the caravan park along the beach, resulted in meeting up with the pelicans once again. We could get amazingly close without them showing the least concern.
Our dinner was booked for 6.30 pm, and having left a relatively empty bar, we were a bit surprised to enter a very busy bistro. The original intention was to have some local seafood, but we discovered there is a better option through a kiosk at the caravan park, and watching the meals coming out, we thought we could do better.
Instead, we had a traditional Sunday Roast Special. Today, it was roast pork, and it was good value for money. We also used the courtesy bus to pick us up and drop us back at the caravan park, which was an added bonus.
