Day 70: Last Day in Carnarvon

Image
This morning we spent a bit of time in the town centre, searching for an ATM, getting some last minute supplies and having a walk down to the waterfront at the end of the main street. The end of the main street looks overe bthe water to Whitlock Island and towards the entrance to the Indian Ocean. Looking towards the entrance to the Indian Ocean Whitlock Island on the right There is a nice walk along the waterfront away from the entrance to a footbridge across to the Heritage Tramway Walking Trail which is currently closed. The trail runs all the way to Babbage Island where we were yesterday going through the Heritage Museum. Along our walk we also learned about Charles Kingsford Smith's connection with Carnarvon. This info board provided details of Charles Kingsford Smith's his connection with this town which started as setting up a transport company with his mate Keith Anderson, who jointly bought a truck to launch the Gascoyne Transport Company and secured a contract for an...

Day 69: Carnarvon and surrounds

Image
This morning we set out to drive the "Fruit Loop", a 26 km journey past many plantation sales outlets, some small honesty box based, and others a more elaborate shop. Our first sop is Tipton's Plantation Roadside shop, a small shed displaying produce and an honesty box.  We bought a few items at cheap prices and moved on to Cosh Plantation Shop. There it was a different story, the had not planted any crops this tear due the cyclones and a death in the family. The next one was an organic farm, a bit more expensive but still cheaper than the supermarkets. Then we had to drive past Humpty Dumpty, a photo op without much e4xplanation as to why it was there. Just down the road was Borich and Sons, a Croatian run plantation which also sold some home made Croatian favourites. We bough a jar of some very nice home made Avjar. And finally we stopped at Bumbacks who sell a lot of home made jams, relishes etc made from the local produce. It was a pretty professional outfit Bumback...

Day 68: Quobba Station to Carnarvon

Image
It is only 83 km to our caravan park in Carnarvon and we did not hurry to leave Quobba Station, but still arrived well ahead of check in time. We had to go to the public dump point on Quobba Point, so that took up a little bit of time. Carnarvon is one of the few places that has a car wash big enough to accommodate caravans, so we called in there on the way and joined the queue. I figured our days of lots of red dirt roads are almost over and the rig is very dirty. There is a caravan in the bay and a motor home waiting in front of us, just as well we have time to burn. Eventually our turn comes and we squeeze into the bay which looks like it was really built for washing boats as it even has a marine flush outlet. We did a reasonable job of cleaning everything up in such a tight space, but a high pressure wash is never as good as a hand wash, however at least everything looks a lot cleaner. Even with the wait for the car wash we are still 45 mins too early so continue into the centre of...
