Day 109: Esperance to Frasers Range Station

The drive from Esperance to Norseman is pretty underwhelming. We did get our hopes up when it appeared that there was a roadhouse at Salmon Gums where we would be able to get a cup of coffee. The roadhouse is there but it looks permanently closed, so we soldiered on to Norseman getting some fuel and a coffee there. The diesel price here is $2.839 / litre and it will only increase as we travel further down the Eyre Highway.

From Norseman we turn onto the Eyre Highway and head East across the Nullarbor. Our plan is to spend tonight at Frasers Range Station, about 100 km east of Norseman. The weather has deteriorated and we drive through and arrive at Frasers range in drizzling rain. Fortunately the sites are all drive through, so we didn't have to unhitch in the rain.

This is a great initiative for a station owner on a stretch of road dominated by roadhouses. They have a good formula attracting campers into a campground a bit off the highway, with power, toilets and showers. They have an onsite restaurant offering a limited menu and a bar.

When we arrived there were lots of spare sites (they have 24 powered sites), but as the day progressed they filled pretty quickly. The rain continued for the rest of the day, so we ate on board, resisting the temptation of an easy meal at the restaurant. It would have been nice to spend the afternoon exploring a few walks from the campground, but the weather did not co-operate.

Hopefully tomorrow the weather will be better.
