Day 78: A Wet and Windy day in Kalbarri

The wind is over 20 knots and gusting to 30 knots, with patches a sometimes heavy rain. We are hoping it will ease during the day, but fully understand why the skipper of the lobster boat we were supposed to be on today cancelled today's outing. Hopefully one of the next few days will be suitable.

Crossing the entrance to the Murchison River is a bit of a tricky affair as there is no protection from break walls. The channel is marked with a dotted line on the chart below.

I went for a walk in the wet this morning and this is what it looks like visually, from across the road from our caravan park.

When the weather looked like improving, after lunch, we went for a short drive down the coast to have a quick look at the many sites they recommend tourists visit. The first of these, not far from where we are is Chinamen's Beach/ Point. It is right on the entrance to the river and showed just how treacherous this passage can be.

The channel markers are taking a bit of a beating from the wave action

The map below provides some guidance on the tourist spots along this coast. We were only interested in going as far as the Red Bluff area, as we will be travelling back down this road on our way to Geraldton in a few days time.

Conditions are far from ideal to visit these spots, but at least it is not raining, and we can always come back and visit the places that attract our interest when the weather improves.

After Chinaman's Point, we called into Blue Holes, the best place in Kalbarri for diving and snorkelling, but not today.

Under different sea conditions it is probably ideal

Every where we stopped along the coast, you could see they would be nice places to visit and spend some time, but not today.

At Red Bluff you can drive right down onto the rock platform.

We drove to the lookout carpark, but the wind was howling and we decided to come back on a more hospitable day.

More wildflowers were discovered along the way, and at the path to Mushroom rock, that we decided to put that off to another day.

The weather is slowly improving, but we head for shelter and visit the local craft brewing company, Finlays, where we tasted and purchased a couple of their beers.

Let's hope tomorrows weather is better. The wind and rain have abated, so we are hopeful.
