Day 45: A Lazy Day at Lombadina

There are no activities planned for today, as the one we wanted to do, is tide dependent and won't be on again until the 8th. It was a mud crabbing expedition with an indigenous guide catching crabs in the mangroves with a metal hook and then returning to the community to eat the catch for lunch. Maybe at one of our other stops a similar opportunity will arise.

We did go for a morning walk and it was allowed to go into the Church today, as it is not Sunday. It is the original structure built in 1934 by a German Pallotine Brother, Joseph Tautz.  Handbuilt from local mangrove and bloodwood timber, with the ceiling lined with paperbark insulation. The Presbytery is also still standing.

Inside the Church has a strong Indigenous decor

Sadly, the Presbytery has not fared well and is run down and unused.

Another important ritual today is to get a loaf of bread baked at the community bakery, which bakes 3 days a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, reputedly making the best bread on the Peninsula. It can be purchased from the office and when we went down to get one, we were asked had we put in an order for one to be reserved. Of course, we knew nothing about this process, but were lucky to secure one of the last unallocated loaves. In a room next to the office, which we think is a conference room, a table was covered in packed loaves of bread awaiting collection.

Happily outlaying our $8 for a home baked loaf of bread out of the bakeries wood fired oven, we now have fresh bread for lunch. The loaf was still warm in its paper bag.

Sandwiches for lunch confirmed it really is very good bread.

The community is hardly a hive of activity, but unlike over the weekend the are some people around in the workshop area, the office is open and has an extra staff member and a backpacker is cleaning the amenities which ran out of toilet paper on Saturday which was replenished today.

arrivals are down and departures are up, so the caravan park has emptied out a bit. There is a rule that the maximum stay is 3 days, but I now think 2 nights is probably enough.

Tomorrow we head further South to Barn Hill Station, a cattle station located right on the coastline which is a popular stopover for campers and caravaners.
