Day 42: Last Day in Broome

Shopping took priority this morning as we are heading off into less developed areas for the next week. There was a good sized Woolworths, K Mart and a couple of fishing shops among the many specialty shops. The BWS there was closed, not opening till 12 noon. We needed to get fuel, so headed off to do that and eventually go to the BWS in town.

A bit of time was also spent in a fishing shop getting some decent snorkelling gear and a few more lures for beach fishing.

A big centre with not a lot of shoppers

It was still to early for BWS when we completed our other tasks, so we found a nice cafe and enjoyed a cup of very good coffee.

Wine supplies are getting low and there will not be any opportunity to top up for the next few days, so the BWS visit is important. The doors opened at 12 noon and there was an inrush of waiting customers. To make the purchase I had to fill out an exemption application to allow me to buy more than a few bottles declaring I was a tourist and not a resident. The salesman then told me to take a photo of the declaration and receipt in case the Police pulled us over on the way back to the caravan park.

The morning just seemed to disappear, as by the time all of this was done it was well into lunchtime.

It is a very hot day, with midday temperatures reaching 40 C. The park seems to have a few less vans in it and for the first time, I saw some peacocks wandering around looking for scraps.

We are hardly inspired to be out in the sun, so relax in the shade at the park until mid afternoon when we decide to go and visit the local distillery, Moontide Distillery. It is quiet close to the caravan park, but no so easy to find.

Tucked away in an industrial area, not far from where we washed our caravan, it was a tidy little operation, with a good tasting area and cheese platters if required.

The tasting/retail area

There were some nice shady outside tables that were the ideal place to try out a tasting paddle of 3 of their gins.

Two of the gins were very nice, so we bought a bottle of each and scored a free T - Shirt.

The rest of the afternoon was spent out of the sun back at the park. Tomorrow we are heading up the Dampier Peninsula for 3 days to Lombadina, an Aboriginal settlement that runs a highly regarded campground in what we are told is a stunning place.
