Day 24: Golf at Katherine Country Club

The park is still pretty full this morning and I was talking to our neighbour who was part of a group of 3 vans travelling together. It turns out that the influx over the weekend was the Finke Desert Rally followers on their way to Darwin for their next major event, the V8 supercars.

Today is golf day.

We arrived for our 8.30 am tee time a little late, but as we were almost the only ones there, it was not a problem. It is a 9 hole course with different tee positions for the front and back nine allowing you to play 18 holes with a bit of variety. The course is flat and dry, but remarkably, there is grass on the fairways and the grass greens are well kept. They even have bunkers and waters hazards.

Green fees were a mere $30 for 18 holes, and a cart $45.

The 1st Hole

A view down the first fairway is daunting, as it takes a while to work out where it goes. Finding the next tee was also often a challenge. Nevertheless, the course was playable and there was plenty of run on the fairways, sometimes too much.

There are also a few non golf hazards, but no crocodile warnings

Not all of the fairways was green

There were a couple of well presented holes, like the par 3 below.

The best par 3 on the course

There were even fairway bunkers on a few holes, and few dams full of water to catch the stray shot.

The greens had us totally confused as they are saucer shaped and the grass very grainy

It took us just under 4 hours to complete the 18 holes, with Carole winning the day by 1 point. Not sure when our next game will be as grass greens will become scarcer. We may have to resort to sand scrapes.

What started out as relaxing afternoon, turned into a bit of a drama as Carole decided to cook a cake, but ended up cooking a plastic take away container lid (which had been stored in the oven) whilst warming the oven up. Fortunately she noticed it quickly and the fire in the oven was quick extinguished. Removing the solidified molten plastic, which had managed to foul the burner took a lot longer.

Storing plastic take away containers in the oven has now been banned.

Eventually, the oven was operational and the cake cooked, but fishing had to wait for another day.

The good news is, the date and ginger loaf was a success, very tasty.
